The Sparks City Council will formally present Sparks Police Chief John Dotson with his badge at the Sparks City Council meeting August 25, as he embarks on retirement at the end of the month after serving more than 15 years with the department.

SPARKS FISCAL YEAR 2008 – 2009 BUDGET CLEARS CITY COUNCIL

The Sparks City Council approved $98 million for governmental operations in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2008-2009 budget.  This represents the expected cost of operations, capital projects, and debt service.  It does not include Enterprise Fund activities.  The FY 2008-2009 budget is a 15.7 percent decrease over FY 2007-2008.

According to the most recent public attitude survey, when it comes to living in the City of Sparks, 97 percent of residents have a favorable view.  When asked how they would rate the "overall quality of life" in the City of Sparks, 97 percent rated the city as good to excellent.

Due to construction activity on the east side of the Sparks Marina, the three call boxes installed throughout the two-mile walking path will be removed for approximately one year.  The on-going construction has prevented a reliable power source for the operation of the boxes.

SPARKS CITY ATTORNEY APPOINTS LOCAL CRIMINAL LAWYER
Doug Nicholson, a long time Sparks resident and criminal defense lawyer, has been hired by the Sparks City Attorney to prosecute misdemeanor citations in the Sparks Municipal Court.  Mr. Nicholson's hire came as a result of a reorganization effort by the Sparks City Attorney to address greater workloads and dwindling resources.

Graffiti taggers beware!  Today at a joint meeting among the City of Sparks, Reno and Washoe County, elected officials unanimously approved an interlocal agreement to use a web-based program to monitor and track graffiti to help prosecute taggers.

SPARKS COUNCILMAN JOHN MAYER RECOGNIZED AS POLITICIAN OF THE YEAR
Today, Sparks City Councilman John Mayer who has represented the City's Ward 1 since 1991, was recognized as Politician of the Year by the Human Services Network (HSN). The award was presented this morning at the 19th annual Human Services Awards Breakfast.

The RTC will be hosting a community open house to update the public about the SouthEast Connector Plan Line Study.  The Valley Corridor has been under study this past year to review alignments for the SouthEast Connector.

DRIVE WITH CAUTION TODAY

City of Sparks snow crews are working hard to place sand and salt on major roadway intersections in Sparks to improve traction.  Motorist are asked to maintain enough distance behind trucks, at least 200 feet or 10 car lengths.

Due to local street flooding, the Rock Boulevard underpass at Intestate-80 is "temporarily closed" due to local street flooding. The City of Sparks and the Nevada Department of Transportation are advising alternate routes for this intersection until further notice.
